Museum screens and publications may show an object under wavelengths or imaging systems beyond normal vision. These images are powerful because they are produced through instruments, processing and interpretation—not because they bypass interpretation. Read the caption, method, scale and colour key before treating a bright pattern as hidden truth.
Name the method
Infrared photography, ultraviolet-induced fluorescence, X-radiography, CT and microscopy reveal different interactions. Do not group them as scans. Copy the institutional method and the question it was used to address.
Read the legend
False colour and contrast enhancement make patterns legible but do not reproduce ordinary appearance. Check scale bars, orientation and colour keys. A bright region may indicate density or response rather than original paint.
Keep object and image paired
Record inventory number, side and acquisition date for the technical image where given. A cropped diagnostic view can become detached from the physical object online. Pair it with an ordinary institutional photograph.
Distinguish detection from identification
Imaging can reveal an underdrawing, join or internal structure without identifying material or date. Further analysis may be required. State what the image shows and what interpretation adds.
Notice processing choices
Stitching, segmentation, reconstruction and threshold settings can clarify data. They can also hide uncertainty if undocumented. Use institutional or published explanations rather than reverse-engineering a polished screen display.
Treat reconstruction as a proposal
A digital colour restoration or completed form combines evidence with decisions. Look for a visible key distinguishing surviving, inferred and comparative parts. Do not caption it as the original object.
Connect imaging to care
Non-invasive does not mean risk-free or universally appropriate. Handling, transport, exposure and research priorities shape access to equipment. Avoid demanding a scan as an easy answer to every uncertainty.
Write an image citation
Include institution, object number, method, view, caption source and access date. Then add one sentence explaining exactly which claim the image supports.
Start with the research question
Before studying a technical image, ask why it was made. Locating an underdrawing, examining density, documenting manufacture and monitoring condition require different methods and processing. The research question helps explain what was included, enhanced or omitted. If the museum display gives only a method name, retain that limit instead of inventing the operator’s purpose from the most visually striking pattern.
Read orientation before detail
Find the object side, top, scale and crop before interpreting any internal feature. Technical views can reverse familiar tones or flatten depth, making orientation surprisingly difficult. Match one stable landmark to an ordinary photograph. This step prevents a crack, join or dense area from being assigned to the wrong side and keeps a diagnostic detail connected to the complete object.
Use captions as part of the image
A colour key, wavelength, slice number or processing note is not optional decoration. Copy it with the image citation and preserve units. If the key is missing from a screenshot, return to the original institutional or published source. An uncited crop may remain visually suggestive, but it cannot securely support a technical claim once method and display conventions have been detached.
Compare independent lines of evidence
An internal form visible in radiography may gain meaning from tool marks, inscriptions, material analysis or comparable objects. List the confirming source rather than allowing one image to carry the whole interpretation. Agreement strengthens a proposal; disagreement can reveal repair, reuse or a processing issue. Either result is more informative than treating technical visibility as automatic identification.
Preserve uncertainty in the final caption
Write what the image records, how it was produced, which interpretation the institution gives and what remains uncertain. Avoid phrases such as reveals the truth or proves the original unless the cited source supports that strength. Technical imaging extends vision through a documented chain of equipment and decisions. Naming that chain makes the result more, not less, persuasive.
Do not touch, use flash or diagnose condition. Separate observation from institutional and technical evidence.
