Colour in a museum is simultaneously material, condition and viewing event. Pigment, glaze, textile dye, stone and metal surface interact with case glass, lamp spectrum, surrounding colour and the viewer’s adaptation. Describe what you see, but treat ancient colour, chemical identification and symbolic meaning as separate claims that require separate evidence.
Name present colour modestly
Use relational terms—darker blue, warm red, pale green—rather than pretending a visual note is a calibrated measurement. Record lighting and nearby coloured surfaces. Screens reproduce another version, so do not sample a phone pixel and present it as the object’s material colour.
Find protected traces
Recesses, folds, joins and covered edges may retain colour differently from exposed areas. Their survival can suggest loss patterns, but one trace does not reconstruct a complete palette. Use conservation imaging and published reconstructions when available, preserving their assumptions and dates.
Separate colourant from hue
Copper compounds, carbon-based blacks, iron-containing reds and organic dyes are technical identifications, not names that sight can confirm. Copy the museum’s material vocabulary. If only colour is stated, keep chemistry open until analysis provides evidence.
Treat fading as uneven history
Light exposure, burial chemistry, washing, previous treatment and abrasion can affect areas differently. Current beige or brown does not prove an originally neutral object. Compare protected zones and technical records without digitally saturating a photograph into imagined originality.
Keep symbolism contextual
Blue, green, gold, black and white can carry important associations, but no universal code applies to every object and period. Combine colour with inscription, form, date, place and use. A symbolic reading should explain why it belongs to this object rather than to a general colour dictionary.
Record surrounding colour
Wall paint, case lining and neighbouring objects influence contrast. Note whether the installation isolates a colour or places it within a group. The gallery composition is a modern interpretive layer that can improve comparison while changing perceived saturation.
Compare three versions
Where available, compare original under gallery light, official collection image and published reconstruction. State what each version clarifies and changes. None should silently replace the others: material presence, controlled photography and scholarly proposal answer different questions.
Build a colour evidence line
Write present observation, labelled material, analytical identification if cited, and contextual interpretation as four separate clauses. This prevents a vivid impression from jumping directly to chemistry or meaning.
Let neutral objects calibrate attention
White labels, grey mounts and clear case edges are not scientific colour standards, yet they can alert you to strongly warm or cool illumination. Record that impression before describing the object. Do not digitally correct the photograph against these surfaces unless the institution provides a calibrated target. The purpose is to notice environmental influence, not to manufacture a supposedly objective colour file.
Compare colour boundaries, not isolated spots
A boundary between pigment fields, glaze and core, or exposed and protected textile often carries more information than a single vivid patch. Describe whether the change is sharp, gradual, abraded or interrupted by a break. Then consult official imaging or conservation notes. Boundary shape can direct a useful question about making or loss without visually identifying the colourant.
Keep reconstructions transparent
When a publication restores a palette, record which areas survive, which are inferred from analysis and which use parallels from other objects. Note the reconstruction date because later imaging can revise it. A responsible caption should never place a digital restoration beside a gallery photograph without identifying the different evidence, processing and degree of completion represented by each version.
Build a comparison set
Select three objects sharing period, material or find context and compare one colour relationship across them. Keep gallery lighting differences visible in the notes. Repetition can show whether a combination deserves further study, but it cannot establish a rule by itself. Catalogue entries, excavation records and technical analysis must still support any claim about workshop, status, symbolism or chronological change.
Do not touch, use flash or diagnose condition. Separate observation from institutional and technical evidence.
